i have a groundless theory that W has a big crush on harriet because she reminds him of an old schoolteacher.

Um, Julie G. was blacklisted because she was seen by some of the other girls having ice cream with a colored boy.

I think you're right about the school marm thing, Luva. Only she looks sort of haggard and hungover, like maybe she has a secret life after dark, a la Diane Keaton in "Looking for Mr. Goodbar."

Wow. I've just been watching news of Miers' withdrawal. Do I have my finger on the pulse of American politics, or what?

G.W.'s dynamic with Harriet bears an uncanny resemblance to that of Charles Foster Kane pushing Susan Alexander into opera. Everyone (including Susan) knows she hasn't got the voice, but Charles insists she's right on. It's embarrassing for everyone.

Good for Harriet for standing up and admitting she's no Renee Flemming.
